WHY We Walk/Run

On June 1st, 2025, join us for the Celebration of Life 5k Walk/Run, both online with a virtual run and in person, as we unite survivors, co-survivors, and supporters in a testament to strength, hope, and community.

Cancer is a formidable adversary, affecting millions of lives globally. Yet, amidst its challenges, stories of courage, perseverance, and victory emerge. National Cancer Survivors Day is not just a date on the calendar; it’s a symbol of resilience, a reminder that life after cancer is not only possible but worth celebrating.

In hosting the Celebration of Life, Unconditionally Her, the WSA, and AGEM aim to harness the power of unity. Survivors, alongside their co-survivors—friends, family, caregivers—will embark on a journey of solidarity. It’s a race not against each other but against the odds, a collective stride towards a brighter, cancer-free future.

So, on June 1st, let’s paint the world with the colors of hope. Whether you’re lacing up your running shoes, donating to support survivorship programs, donning your favorite survivor tee, or simply spreading awareness, your presence matters. Together, let’s make this Celebration of Life 5k Walk/Run a testament to the strength of the human spirit and a beacon of hope for generations to come.

And, as we mark National Cancer Survivors Day, Unconditionally Her will be featuring Survivor Sunday as we share stories of survivors from across the world leading up to June 1st where we will celebrate life, unity, and resilience. Whether online or in person, let’s come together to honor survivors, support co-survivors, and stand in solidarity against cancer. Together, we are stronger. Together, we are unstoppable.

National Cancer Survivors Day:

A Call to Action. A Celebration of Life.

Sunday, June 1, 2025

National Cancer Survivors Day® is a poignant, inspiring Celebration of Life led by the National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation. It is also a call to action for further research, more resources, and increased public awareness to improve the lives of cancer survivors. This day provides an opportunity for all people living with a history of cancer – including America’s more  than 18 million cancer survivors – to connect with each other, celebrate milestones, and recognize those who have supported them along the way.

The Difficulty of the Journey Turns Out to Be The Blessing. The year of 2010 was a difficult year for me. I watched my mother’s health decline to daily losses and indignities. Watching my mother suffer was heartbreaking. In October, I went for my annual mammogram and was informed I missed a year. Following the examination professionals told me they saw something unusual. I rationalized, that no one in my... Read the full story here through Unconditionally Her.

#WhatTheCluck. Why did the chicken run across the road? This chick ran across the road to outrun her cancer. Seriously. My story began at age 30 with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. At 48, it was high blood pressure. At 53, type 2 diabetes. But at 57, Endometrial Cancer? When my doctor told me that, I HAD to ask: “What the cluck is endometrial cancer?” Turns out, it’s NOT a rare cancer. It’s the 4th most common cancer among women… Read the full story here through Unconditionally Her.

An Unexpected Champion. It was Blizzard Jonas…the Blizzard of the century. I got stuck on a business trip in Washington DC to launch a 3-year national project to improve women’s health locally. There were no flights back to Nashville for at least 4 days. Making lemonade out of lemons, my colleagues and I decided to walk to Walmart to get snow supplies that every southern girl needs to survive a blizzard: peanut butter (for protein); Benadryl (for Read the full story here through Unconditionally Her.

A Knitted Knocker Poet. I’m the lady who came to church on crutches, then wearing a wig AND who can’t sing a lick! I fell from a ladder, shattered my leg, endured three surgeries and a blood clot. (I wasn’t as young as I thought I was!) Eight months later a nurse seeing me on crutches blurted, “Oh you have that, too!” My physician confirmed I had right-sided breast cancer. I underwent a mastectomy with reconstruction, tattoos, and chemotherapy. Two years later I was diagnosed with…Read the full story here through Unconditionally Her.
